In October 1986, Margaret Lowthian Cook of Lamarde Perro Ridgebacks, organized the first club function of the newly formed San Diego Rhodesian Ridgeback Club (SDRRC). The fun match was on a grassy site in Kearny Mesa. Everyone had a wonderful time as the club boasted 15 entries with 5 dogs in its first Parade of Champions. The goal was to bring Ridgeback owners together to become acquianted to have fun with their dogs.
Over 30 years later, this is still a primary function of the club. In addition to fun, the club also supports breed rescue, sponsors information seminars for members and guests, and promotes education to the public about our wonderful breed. Our annual Meet the Breed booth in conjunction with the Silver Bay Kennel Club show in February continues our effort to share our wonderful breed with the public.
We have since expanded in both membership and activities. We became an approved AKC breed member club in 2002 and hosted our first Regional Specialty in 2003. Our Specialty in recent years has been held in Indio, in conjunction with the Palm Springs 4 day cluster, which kicks off the show year in January. It has hosted some of the largest Ridgebcak entries in California, often exceeding 100. We are also approved to hold Lure Coursing, Agility trails, Matches, and fun events such as Canine Good Citzen tests, herding instinct, dog hikes, etc.
